The second season of Netflix’s Wednesday dropped its first part on August 6, 2025 and we’re back in the delightfully gruesome world of Wednesday Addams. Directed by Tim Burton and starring Jenna Ortega, the show builds on the success of the first season with new mysteries, supernatural thrills and gothic vibes. One big change for Season 2 is the filming location. After shooting the first season in Romania, the production moved to Ireland and used the country’s creepy landscapes and historic buildings to create the eerie backdrop for Nevermore Academy and beyond. Here’s a deep dive into the Irish locations that brought Wednesday Season 2 to life.

Why Ireland?

The decision to move from Romania’s misty Transylvanian castles to Ireland’s emerald landscapes was driven by both practical and creative reasons. According to co-showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Ireland’s “timeless beauty, wonder and epic-ness” was perfect for the show’s gothic feel. Ireland’s amended Section 481 tax credit, which offers up to €125 million in eligible expenditure, also made it an attractive location for big productions, with Wednesday being the biggest TV production ever to shoot in the country, according to Variety. The move allowed the team to scale up Nevermore Academy and the fictional town of Jericho, Vermont, and infuse the show with Ireland’s magic.

Key Filming Locations

Ashford Studios, County Wicklow

Ashford Studios was the main production hub for Wednesday Season 2. The studio was expanded by 170,000 square feet to accommodate the show’s massive sets and housed intricate interiors like Nevermore Academy’s gothic classrooms, dorms and the Rave’N dance hall. Key sets like the Founders Pyre, Pilgrim World, Professor Orloff’s lab and the interiors of Rotwood Cottage were built here. The studio’s state-of-the-art facilities allowed the production team to get the show’s dark look just right.

Charleville Castle, County Offaly

Nevermore Academy is now located at Charleville Castle, a Gothic Revival masterpiece built in 1798. The castle with its towers and secret passages is said to be haunted by a young girl called Harriet. It was used for both interior and exterior scenes for the school. The nearby woods, which look like the Romanian forests from Season 1, are the woods of Nevermore and match the show.

Trinity College Dublin

Unexpected locations were created from Dublin’s Trinity College for the series. The Trinity Business School became Newark Airport in New Jersey as the security desk was converted into an airline check-in counter for the metal detector scene on Wednesday. The Phil Council Room in the Graduates Memorial Building was used for interior scenes, combining an academic atmosphere with the show’s dark tone. Filming took place on May 21st 2024 when the campus was open to students and staff and caused excitement among locals.

Powerscourt Estate, County Wicklow

Powerscourt Estate, with its gardens, stone terraces and the 2nd highest waterfall in Ireland was the natural backdrop for Camp Jericho and Nevermore Cemetery. The estate’s redwood forests and historic grounds, which were featured in films like The Green Knight and Vikings, added to the grand and slightly unsettling atmosphere. Jenna Ortega said of the challenge of toning down the estate’s lush greenery to match the Addams Family’s darker palette: “The biggest challenge we faced was the amount of green. It was very green and very vibrant for the performance.”

Dean’s Grange Cemetery, County Dublin

No Addams Family story would be complete without a cemetery and Dean’s Grange Cemetery was it. One of the largest cemeteries in Dublin, famous for its ancient gravestones and tree lined walkways, was the location for Joanna Lumley’s scenes as Grandmama. Extra cemetery scenes were shot on a set built at Ashford Studios. Morticia’s Rotwood Cottage was built outside with a small model in Cloragh Woods and inside at Ashford Studios.

Cloragh Woods, County Wicklow

Morticia Addams’ Rotwood Cottage was a miniature set in Cloragh Woods with interior scenes shot at Ashford Studios. The use of perspective added a whimsical Burton-esque touch to the gothic cabin.

Clonliffe College, Dublin

The gothic corridors of Clonliffe College, a former priest training college in Drumcondra, was the Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital where the villainous Hyde Tyler Galpin is locked up. The building was perfect for the show’s dark aesthetic and provided a chilling setting for key scenes.

Other Notable Locations

Newcastle, County Wicklow: A housing estate in Newcastle was transformed into the Kansas City Scalper’s suburban home. The crew roughed up the tidy street to fit the show’s grim tone.

Killruddery House and Gardens, Bray: The 17th-century estate’s wild woodlands and Victorian conservatory was used for outdoor chases and mystical rituals.

Wicklow Mountains National Park: The park’s foggy moors, ancient ruins and glacial valleys provided epic wind-swept backdrops for Wednesday’s psychic visions and dramatic scenes.

Sally Gap and Lough Tay: These Wicklow landscapes including the picturesque “Guinness Lake,” were used as outdoor adventure backdrops with winding roads featured in the teaser trailer.

Kilternan Ski School, County Dublin: This was possibly used for winter or creatively repurposed scenes. Ireland has so many versatile filming locations.

The Irish Experience

The cast and crew fell in love with Ireland’s magic. Jenna Ortega loved the locals and the countryside, Luis Guzmán described the landscape as “sensational, so beautiful, so nostalgic,” and Joanna Lumley said “There’s something in Ireland which is slightly otherworldly and it felt like Wednesday.” The close relationship with the local crew made it feel like a family and Ireland’s Celtic mythology inspired new supernatural elements like banshees and fairy rings that blended seamlessly into the Addams Family universe.

A Tourism Boom

The Irish locations are now a “set-jetting” trend with fans flocking to visit places like Charleville Castle, Powerscourt Estate and Dean’s Grange Cemetery. Tourism Ireland are capitalising on this and are promoting behind the scenes content and Airbnb’s near filming locations. #WednesdayNetflix and #IrelandLocations are trending as fans plan their gothic getaways to see the show’s settings for themselves.

Moving from Romania to Ireland for Wednesday Season 2 was a masterstroke; the Emerald Isle’s gothic castles, misty forests and historic estates raised the show’s visual game. From the grandeur of Charleville Castle to the eerie beauty of Powerscourt’s waterfall, Ireland’s landscapes became characters in their own right and Tim Burton’s dark vision. As fans binge the show and plan their Irish adventures, Wednesday Season 2 has made Ireland a gothic travel destination and proved that sometimes the perfect backdrop is worth crossing continents for.
