Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan and F1, is a hit. It’s Apple’s biggest box office success. Both movies used IMAX cameras. That’s what made the big screen experience special and brought people to the theaters. Sinners, the vampire thriller, made over $360 million worldwide. IMAX screens made up 19% of that total and made $20.6 million in its second weekend. It played again in 9 IMAX 70mm theaters from May 15 to May 21. That’s how big and popular it’s become. Critics and audiences love it.
Warner Bros. released F1, which did almost $300m worldwide. IMAX did $60m or 20.4% of the total. The Imax experience of Formula One racing really connected with the audience more than Apple’s previous releases like Napoleon ($221m). Premium format did $27.4m or 25% of the total national box office in the US and Canada.
Not as many people are going to the movies after the pandemic, but IMAX is doing better than others because it’s a premium experience. Filmmakers like Coogler, who highlighted the 70mm Imax format of the movie and the F1 creative team, who got a 3-week Imax run, used this to boost both their artistic and financial results. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said the company is in a good spot with a record $1.2 billion box office prediction for 2025. That’s backed by a strong slate of movies, including Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
Sinners and A Minecraft Movie helped to increase domestic box office by 11% over 2024, but still 30% behind 2019. The performance of these films is in line with the overall box office comeback. By continuing to focus on premium formats and relationships with creative filmmakers Imax is staying ahead of the curve in the changing theatrical landscape and delivering experiences that boost industry morale and box office.
