In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Jennifer Aniston talked about her deep sadness for her friend and former co-star, Matthew Perry. She said she’d been mourning him for years because of his long and painful battle with addiction.
“We did everything we could, when we could,” she said. “But it almost felt like we’d been mourning Matthew for a long time because his struggle was so hard for him. As painful as it was for all of us and for the fans, part of me thinks it’s for the best now. I’m glad he’s no longer suffering from that pain.”
Matthew Perry died at 54 from acute ketamine and drowning. He’d spoken about the support he received from his friends in his book Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. In a 2022 interview with Diane Sawyer, he specifically mentioned Aniston saying she was “the one who stepped up the most” during his battle.
After he passed, Aniston posted a sweet tribute on social media saying she was experiencing “inexplicable” grief and a special bond. “We all experience loss at some point in our lives,” she wrote. “Loss of life or loss of love. Being able to truly sit with that grief allows you to experience moments of joy and gratitude for having loved someone so deeply.”
She remembered Perry’s love of making people laugh: “Matty knew he loved making people laugh. If he didn’t hear the laughter, he thought he was going to die. And boy, did he. He made us all laugh. And really laugh.” These words sum up the intensity of a friendship that went way beyond work. As she so beautifully put it “We loved him deeply. He was part of our DNA. It was always the six of us.”
